Washington Crossing the Delaware, painted by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze in 1851, has become a
symbol of the American spirit, representing the courageous spirit of the
American people in spite of setbacks. It depicts the story of a general, a
troop, and a nation that emerged from a desperate situation with an unyielding
will.
Between December 25
and 26, 1776, in a snowstorm on Christmas night, Washington led his troops
across the 300-yard-long Delaware River. This unexpected move allowed
Washington's troops to raid a Hessians' camp 19 miles away from them. The
victory was a great boost to the morale of the Northern Army and became a
turning point in the American Revolutionary War.
Washington Crossing the Delaware depicts Washington crossing the Delaware River during the
American Revolutionary War. A simple boat occupies a large portion of the
scene, with Washington standing at the bow as the leader, leading a large group
of soldiers. The soldiers struggle to glide the oars, fighting against the
raging ice water. The thick ice in the painting is striking and numerous enough
to emphasize the difficulty of crossing the river at that time. Leutze's
careful depiction of the clothing and facial features of the figures on the
boat shows that, despite their different backgrounds, these people all shared
the same determination to cross the river together in order to gain
independence.
Leutze completed
the first version of this painting in 1849, but it was destroyed in a fire in
1850. Although it was later restored, it was destroyed again in a bombing raid
in 1942. His 1851 work, the second version of the painting, became immensely
popular and immortalized and spread Leutze's fame in the painting world. The
record of the Battle of Trenton once wrote: "Like a bunch of ragged
lunatics, we crossed the ice-covered Delaware River barefoot and roared and
attacked the Hessian camp." This quote vividly depicts the scene, and when
combined with this exciting painting, it is as if the entire picture is right
in front of the viewer's eyes.
