John William Godward, the last Neo-Classical painter in
England, was born on August 9, 1861, and painted Idleness II in
1900. The painter died of suicide on December 13, 1922.
Godward was a famous painter of his time, and for a long
time, his works were acknowledged and sought after by many people. However, the
artistic trend was changing over time, and with the arrival of the 20th
century, the era of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Godward’s works have languished in the
art community. He was estranged and even cut off from his family, so after his
death, his family was ashamed of his suicide and burned all the sketches and
manuscripts he left behind. Only a photograph of Godward was preserved.
IIdleness II depicts
a woman in a light yellow dress sitting on a crescent-shaped marble bench by
the sea, holding a peacock feather in her right hand and teasing a mischievous
kitten. She is elegant and focused, and the adorable kitten moves vividly and
realistically. Behind her, the pink oleander blooms, echoing her long yellow
and purple dress, giving the painting a subtle and sultry feel. It is worth
noting that the curved marble stool and the floor have apparent wear and cracks
due to the long rainy weather, which shows John William Godward’s meticulous
depictions of detail.
